This course is an introduction to the history, philosophy and essential elements of Herbal Medicine. It is an in-depth overview of the practice of Herbal Medicine. Students are introduced to the history of herbal medicine, including ancient traditions, the fundamental principles and philosophies of Western medicine through the teachings and practices of Hippocrates, as well as the less commonly recognized roots of medicine (both herbal and modern). The course materials cover the philosophies and history of a variety of traditions from around the world to the modern practice of herbal medicine. This course offers students an overview of the origins of medicinal substances and medical systems in North America, as well as the terminology, properties, habitat, collection, and methods of preparation, delivery and treatments commonly used. The fundamental properties of medicinal substances will also be introduced. The legal and ethical considerations of herbal medicine will also be discussed and the basic botanical knowledge of Western Herbs will be included as it applies.

AYSEN FARAG
Aysen is an indigenous medicine person of Egyptian-Amazigh (Berber), Moinjaang (Dinka), and Kuku-Bari heritage. Over the last decade, Aysen has focused on working with plant medicines from her ancestral lineage, while also deepening her relationship to the plant medicines on the land of her current residence in Ontario, Canada.

 

 

MARCIA DIXON, Medical Herbalist, RH
Marcia is a Medical Herbalist, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Herbal Medicine from the College of Phytotherapy, and completed her Masters of Science in Herbal Medicine at the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine. Marcia holds professional membership with the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH) and the Ontario Herbalists Association (OHA).

 

 

ALEXIS COFFEY, RH
Alexis is a Clinical Herbalist and the Program Director of Therapeutic Herbal Medicine programs at the Institute of Traditional Medicine. Alexis holds professional membership with the Ontario Herbalist Association (OHA) and practices in Toronto, bringing plant medicine, natural health practices, lifestyle and nutritional guidance to her clients to support them through both chronic and acute health conditions.
